As the bell rang to end my final lesson of the day, I called after the students, âThere will be a surprise test next week so make sure to read the required materials over the weekend using the references Iâve provided.â
âWhat day is the test, Ms Maclean?â Alex called.
âThat would ruin the surprise, Alex,â I yelled as they disappeared down the corridor.
Just as I finished packing up my briefcase, ready to lock up the classroom and head home for the day, my phone rang. I threw my briefcase down and fumbled for my pocket, barely glancing at the caller ID. âClaire! How did he do?â
âPassed with flying colours, of course!â She squealed down the phone, and I proceeded to perform a happy dance around my desk.
âOh, thatâs such brilliant news, Claire. Well done!â
âIt was all thanks to you, Cole. Truly, Iâm so grateful. Me and Paradox are going to have the best time. And you need to pop over soon for a visit to catch up, of course.â
âConsider it done,â I said, running a hand through my hair. âIâm so happy for you both.â
âMe too,â Claire gushed, and I heard the boy of the hour barking excitedly in the background.
âIâll bring the rest of his stuff over soon,â I said, ignoring the tiny crack in my heart. âHeâs got a few toys and a blanket that he loves, so I want to make sure he keeps them with him.â
âHeâll have too many toys, I wonât know where to put them all,â Claire joked. âYou know Iâll have the kettle on. Just drop me a message when youâre heading over.â
âWill do. Thanks so much for letting me know.â
âThe pleasure was all mine, Cole. Iâll see you soon, OK?â
âYeah, see you soon. Bye.â I disconnected the call, put my hands on my thighs, and leaned over, taking a few deep breaths. The relief that Paradox had finished his training and passed his final tests was such a weight off my shoulders. I genuinely felt twenty stone lighter.
I knew the next couple of days would be a little lonelier without the sprightly fellow at my heel, but it was a happy melancholic ache in my heart, which I also knew was temporary. Weâd been together for four full months, learning everything together, and it was natural I would miss his happy little face and playful grumps, especially when he had to go out into the rain for a pee first thing in the morning. I made a mental note to bake him the best homemade dog biscuits I could manage.
